LPWAN – Mioty® Module Firmware

The mioty® m.YON module from Swissphone is a compact IoT endpoint module for robust LPWAN communication, which is ideally suited for industrial and large-scale sensor networks thanks to its high resistance to interference.

Arendi integrated the mioty® Stack (Fraunhofer IIS) into a Zephyr-based firmware and implemented the host connection and the multistage bootloader. This gave Swissphone a reliable and quickly integrable firmware base.

Initial situation, goals & challenges

For the implementation of the highly innovative mioty® radio standard in the m.YON IoT module, Swissphone relied on Arendi as a leading technological development partner – building on a long-standing partnership in other MCU-related firmware projects.

The challenge lay in seamlessly integrating the complex Fraunhofer mioty® stack into a highly efficient, Zephyr-based embedded firmware system. At the same time, the host interfaces (SPI/UART) and a completely fail-safe multi-stage bootloader concept for future over-the-air (FOTA) updates had to be designed and implemented from scratch to guarantee maximum stability in license-free, interference-prone radio environments.

Project results & customer benefits

The collaboration resulted in a robust, production-ready firmware platform that transforms the m.YON module into a ready-to-use, plug-and-play solution for industrial IoT applications.

By combining all critical embedded disciplines—from low-level stack integration and comprehensive automated test integration to a secure update mechanism—time-to-market was significantly reduced and technological project risk minimized.
