Wireless flush activation

Wireless flush activation

Bluetooth® and 868 MHz toilet flush trigger

The HEWI flush release is a universal, wireless toilet flush unit for accessible sanitary systems. It supports both Bluetooth Low Energy and a proprietary sub-GHz radio technology and can be flexibly integrated into various HEWI product variants.

«Arendi developed two complete radio electronics systems for HEWI, including firmware – from architecture and implementation to industrialization. In addition to series production approval, Arendi also provided production testing equipment, radio and EMC certifications, and delivered a production-ready solution to the customer.»

In our collaboration with Arendi, we experienced them as a very reliable and competent development partner who implemented our customer-specific electronics development professionally, in a solution-oriented manner, and to our complete satisfaction.

Initial situation, goals & challenges

HEWI was looking for a reliable development partner with extensive experience in wireless technology, low-power systems, and industrial applications. The goal was to develop a production-ready flushing trigger within approximately 12 months and to launch it into series production on schedule.

The key challenge lay in implementing a dual wireless concept using Bluetooth Low Energy and proprietary sub-GHz radio technology, while simultaneously achieving extremely low energy consumption for multi-year battery life. In addition, a tight timeline for series production and a cost-optimized bill of materials design had to be adhered to.

Project results & customer benefits

The result is two variants of a radio-tested, production-ready printed circuit board (PCB) that can be manufactured reliably and cost-effectively in larger quantities.

HEWI receives a fully developed and tested solution from a single source – including directly integrable PCBs for series production. This significantly reduces interfaces, project risks, and time-to-market.

Implemented solution

Arendi implemented a compact, energy-optimized wireless solution designed for industrial series production:

  • Development of two printed circuit board variants in Altium Designer (PCBs only) with identical core architecture
  • Firmware development for Bluetooth Low Energy and proprietary sub-GHz radio operation
  • Deployment of a Nordic nRF54-SoC based on Zephyr for BLE communication
  • Use of a Holtek sub-GHz transceiver for the proprietary radio solution
  • Consistent low-power optimization for multi-year battery life
  • Development and implementation of industrialization at a Swiss EMS partner
  • Development of production and testing equipment
  • Conducting radio and EMC approvals at a German testing laboratory
  • Qualified and listed the products at Bluetooth SIG as BQC
  • Delivery of a production-ready, qualified solution to HEWI
