Zirbel - Patented Bluetooth Ring Shifter

The Zirbel BLE Ringshifter brings the revolutionary, patented ring shifting concept to the world of wireless bike cockpits – ultra-compact, intuitive, and with outstanding tactile feedback. This innovative technology enables lightning-fast shifting and elevates the riding experience to a new level.

Arendi developed a fully functional Bluetooth Low Energy Ringshifter prototype for Zirbel in a very short time – including hardware, antenna design and firmware – demonstrating its strength in miniaturization, radio technology and fast development cycles.

Initial situation, goals & challenges

Zirbel was looking for an experienced development partner who was proficient in both radio technology and ultra-compact electronics and could produce a market-ready prototype within a very short timeframe.

The key challenge lay in extreme miniaturization and reliable wireless operation within a robust metal housing, all while adhering to a tight deadline for a trade fair presentation.

The result is a ready-to-use, wireless ring shifter prototype as the basis for a future series production product in the bike sector.

Implemented solution

Arendi developed the ring shifter electronics with Altium Designer based on the nRF54L05, featuring specially designed, miniaturized electronics and a customized antenna design. Targeted 3D radio simulations and innovative design approaches ensured a reliable radio link despite the metallic housing. Simultaneously, firmware based on the nRF Connect SDK and Zephyr RTOS was developed within a few weeks, along with a fully tested trade show prototype.
